Initial Officer Response to Death Scenes – October 19-20, 2026
A two-day seminar for patrol personnel who are first to be dispatched or sent to a scene where the death of a person has taken place whether by accident, injury, homicide, suicide, or other means. The program will offer a broad overview regarding the officer’s role and activity at such scenes and stress the importance of procedure necessary for proper action until those with specific skill in handling the situation might arrive. Topics include: (1) definition and consideration of responsibilities of the first officer on the scene; (2) assessing the situation; (3) initial identification and interviews of victims, suspects, and witnesses; (4) proper recording of the situation and pertinent events of the incident; (5) protecting and collecting crime scene evidence or other data; and (6) and making notification to supervisors and other departmental staff of scene situation.
